Jaden monitored the small door, counting his racing heartbeats. Ever since he cleaned out the basement — as his mother had ordered him — and uncovered this small door that could barely fit two cats, he would hear strange things beyond the barrier of the carefully carved wooden door. However, when he twisted the rusty knob and forcibly pulled the door open there was nothing but the stonewall of his basement. Jaden assessed the small door from his dark corner for a few minutes, deliberating whether he should crawl over and try the door again. Jaden told himself that the dancing shadows of the basement manipulated the dim light to make it seem as though the doorknob had turned, trying to lure him into their trap. He flipped through the last few pages and glanced at his watch. When he was about to give himself up to his cousin, he heard footsteps from behind the small door.
