Make a Joyful Noise

Sounds of Peace: A Joyful Noise in Honoka‘a

High School for first place in both categories. Bands from several area high schools were among the roughly 20 bands that competed, first marching down Main Street for a mostly local crowd and later performing in an afternoon field exercise. Pipestone director Mark Diischer said he was impressed with the efficiency of the parade. His was one of the larger bands to compete, but the students still did well, he said. When they come out and perform that's the fun part for me. The Luverne High School Band received an especially warm hometown welcome as they finished the parade with "Pastime," an arrangement that celebrates the game of baseball.

By Catherine Tarleton. What does peace sound like? It might sound like rock and roll with a mix of chant and laughter, or the buzz of robotic engines rolling down the street. It sounds like fun. This is not just a procession down the street, waving at the crowd or carrying signs. With about 40 different acts, the parade transforms the usually quiet, former sugar cane town into a celebration of peace for a day, enjoyed by hundreds along the way.

It all started when he and assistant band director Ryan Hanson decided to do something of an about face and devote more time to small group instruction and interaction. The idea was not necessarily for the sake of competing, but to learn what it's like to participate with others at that level. More small-group ensembles meant more practice time, more supervision and more sessions, so Mowers and Hanson drew on the expertise of student teacher Cody Nichols from the University of Wisconsin Superior, as well volunteer coaches Jennifer Osborne, Zach Haataja and Beth Osborne. Along with the Jazz One ensemble, Esko was represented in the competition by 23 other small groups and soloists. Among them - a percussion ensemble comprised of students playing a piece called "Fresh Trash" on garbage cans, a marimba solo performance of Handel's "Sonata No. Their scores ranged mostly in the mid- to upperpoint range, all the way up to the perfect 40s. Twenty-one of the Esko groups that competed earned the right to advance to state competition on April in Two Harbors.

The Brooklyn Boys Chorus, an offshoot of the famed Newark Boys Chorus, will celebrate its first holiday season in New York by lifting its voice in Christmas song all around its new town. Under the baton of James McCarthy, the founder and executive director, the chorus's repertoire will include traditional favorites as well as special contemporary arrangements. Works will include a mixture of Renaissance, classical, gospel, electronic, folk and show music. The chorus, the only such group in the borough, was organized last summer as a resident company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. McCarthy for more than eight years, became one of the few professional boys choruses in the country.

Williamstown, N. City Paper : How did you get started in music and acting? Then, when I hit 13, Newman approached me and asked if I was interested in pursuing entertainment. I said it was something I wanted to do, but I was in school, getting good grades and playing basketball. But when I was 13, I took my first professional vocal lesson, and got an agent and manager and the rest took off from there. DD: A number of things interested me about Walter.
