If your Fire tablet or Kindle e-reader screen is slow to respond or freezes, restart your device or try the following troubleshooting steps. Press and hold, or slide and hold, the Power button for a full 40 seconds. Even after the screen goes blank, continue to hold for 40 seconds, then let go. Press or slide the power button to restart if the device does not start up again on its own. If the screen is still unresponsive, plug in your device using the USB cord or power adapter that came with it.

Resetting the Kindle
I've always been able to turn off my Kindle basic model by holding in the power button until the charge light flashes. But after charging the unit this morning I've been unable to turn it completely off. It either goes into sleep mode or pops right back on. Charge the Battery If the Kindle does not have enough battery power, it can freeze up. Plug the Kindle into a wall outlet and ensure the indicator light is on, which means the battery is charging. Allow the device to charge for a few minutes; then, attempt to navigate on the screen.
