Herbert's success with Under Pressure was only a shadow of what was to come with his second novel, Dune. Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula awards, it is considered by many to be the greatest work of science fiction ever written. This concern with the dangers of hero worship is already evident in Under Pressure. Ramsey's rejection of the paternalism of psychology and his analysis of the subtug crew's dependency on their captain anticipates features of Dune 's portrayal of the human love affair with messiahs and supermen. Nonetheless it was no easy jump from the tight little world of the Fenian Ram to the parched wastes of Arrakis. It took eight years for Herbert's insights to gain mass and momentum and to become focused in a single story.

The first novel tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose family takes over governing the desert planet Arrakis aka Dune , only to be betrayed by the evil rival Harkonnen family. As payback, Paul rallies the locals on the planet, igniting a rebellion that eventually makes him both a messiah and emperor of the universe. While being a serious page-turner, the novel also manages to do a lot of deep thinking along the way.

Dune is a science fiction novel by American author Frank Herbert , originally published as two separate serials in Analog magazine. Set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which various noble houses control planetary fiefs , Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides , whose family accepts the stewardship of the planet Arrakis. While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange , or "the spice", a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice. The first novel also inspired a film adaptation by David Lynch , the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries Frank Herbert's Dune and its sequel Frank Herbert's Children of Dune which combines the events of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune , a series of computer games , a board game , songs, and a series of followups, including prequels and sequels, that were co-written by Kevin J. Anderson and the author's son, Brian Herbert , starting in

A power struggle on the desert planet Arrakis, the sole source of Melange, a resource vital for spaceflight, he who wins will wield great power and influence over the universe. The usurped Duke, Paul Atreides, on his struggle through this to regain his seat, encounters several life-changing discoveries, could he be the messiah? Whatever the outcome it will be felt by all. Winston Smith, the low-ranking disgruntled civil servant in the ruling party of London. But not the London we know, one of constant observation, of control, or a rewritten history. Although the tech talk in novel certainly dates it, it has enough ingenuity and twist and turns to keep you invested. The story checks all the sci-fi boxes; mega-corporations, biotechnology and hackers — it is a classic.

Half a century ago, a middle-aged newspaperman with a few obscure books to his name sat down to pursue a pet obsession based on a story that had never sold. The ensuing novel -- in which his agent had no confidence -- sagged at first. But it grapples with numerous issues pressing in the 21st: the fragility of the environment, the shortage of fossil fuels, the threat of religious jihad, the unpredictable effects of mind-bending drugs. Herbert was doing hard-core SF in the anthropological and world-building sense. The book also helped galvanize the environmental movement: Set on a world far from ours, its rich description of a water-poor planet is credited by some as the inspiration for Earth Day. And though a film was widely considered a failure and two subsequent Sci-Fi Channel miniseries were made, Paramount recently selected a director for a big-budget movie.
