Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star by Iza Trapani1. Awards: N/A
2. Grade Level: Kindergarten to second grade
3. Summary: A child wishes she could visit the brightest star in the sky. The star comes down to the young girl and takes her on a “magic ride”. They travel through the sky over land, space, and through the dark night over the ocean. The star explains how it watches people grow and helps people find their way back home.
4. Review: This song is comforting showing that the brightest star is always shining down on you every night. The illustrations are beautiful, especially the illustration of Saturn. Children will enjoy singing along to this book with the illustrations and listening to and reading about the magic.
5. Possible In-Class Use: This book can be used to teach rhyming. The teacher would explicitly teach and explain that rhyming words are words that have the same sounds at the end then give some examples while sounding out the examples and have the class follow along. Some of the rhyming words would rhyme with words in the book and some would not. The teacher can go through a couple of pages a day until the children understand rhyming. Another in-class use would be to have the children write or draw where they would want to travel. If the children are interested, this could also be an introduction to learning about the planets for informational texts or the places they would want to travel to. The children could create the planets in small-groups out of various materials and the teacher can hang them on the ceiling as a small scale solar system. This builds creativity, collaboration, communication, and an introduction to astronomy.
